Hypothesis Regarding Francis Nelson LaPorte

Not having much luck finding a "Francois Denis" or "Francois Narcisse Denis" or a "Narcisse Denis" born about the time I would expect for Francis Nelson LaPorte, so I'm going to test out a new hypothesis -- namely, that Francis Nelson LaPorte is not Julius LaPorte's brother, son of Charles Denis, but instead is the son of Jean Baptiste LaPorte and Agathe Masse.

I've found a record for Narcisse LaPorte born at about the right time:

Narcisse LaPorte born to Jean Baptiste LaPorte and Agathe Mace, on the 29th of November 1814.

Besides the date of birth here and the seeming absence of a birth about the same time of a similarly-named "Denis" child, there is the eventual settlement of Francis Nelson LaPorte in Beekmantown, New York. Jean Baptiste LaPorte also lived there:

Jean Baptiste (based on some research that I've done and that I've borrowed) appears to the be "John" listed here in Edward LaPorte's home in Beekmantown. Francis Nelson LaPorte was also in Beekmantown in 1850, but had moved to Mooers, New York by the time of the 1860 Census.

The final thing that has sparked my theory that he is Jean Baptiste's son, not Charles's son is the intertwining of Francis Nelson's children (particularly Sidney Nelson and his family) with another LaPorte family -- Joseph LaPorte (who married Nancy Beagle). Sidney Nelson LaPorte had some inter-connections with the LaPorte-Niles group that later produced a number of Niles-LaPorte intermarriages.

A death record for Francis Nelson LaPorte in Beekmantown would be a nice thing to have . . .. Also, I need to re-examine all of the "evidence" that I had for initially forming the Julius/Julien/Francis Nelson are brothers hypothesis. I wonder if it is any deeper than a forum post that I saw years ago.

My 3GRGRandmother

Mary Jane Garrow. Jane Garrow. Marie Genevieve Garant.  Of all of the people in my family tree (so far, in my research) none have had more names than my 3GRGRandmother -- my 3GRGR's first wife.

It took a very long time to discovery her roots, but those came pouring in like an avalanche several months ago when I discovered my very distant cousin, Jonathan Tetreault's work online.  He linked Garrow to Mace/Masse, which I knew existed but was unable to piece together.

Jonathan also found for me my 3GRGR's baptismal record. The copy available on ancestry.com is pretty weak. So, I found a much higher res version today on Family Search -- thanks again, Mormons.

Jonathan was also good enough to translate it entirely for me:

March 20, 1817, by the undersigned priest baptized Marie Geneviève, born the 18th of the same month, of the legitimate marriage of Joseph Garant, day laborer in this parish, and Geneviève Mâcé. The godfather was Pierre Mâcé and godmother Geneviève Lanier, who didn't sign, also the father was present.

"Jane Garrow" was one of 17 children to Joseph Garant and Sylvia Genevieve Mace. The connection that I knew about and that eventually lead me to Jonathan and this flood of information was that Jane's mother's brother (her uncle) was named Moss or Masse and had a daughter Emily, who my 3GRGR took as his second wife.

Jane's grandfather / godfather, Pierre Masse had another daughter (Jane's aunt) Marie Agathe Mace (b. 1793), who married Jean Baptiste LaPorte (b. 1784) , who is also responsible for a slew of LaPortes in the North Country.

Who SHOULD HAVE BEEN Living at Home in 1863?

At first I thought that this blurb from my 3GGR's pension file (an part of an affidavit from my 2GRGR) might shed some light on Julius's kids -- whether any died in childhood, etc.  But upon second glance, I'm not sure that it does.

It says:

Q:  Did your father Julius Laporte remarry after the death of your mother: if so, to whom?
A.  He did. He went into the army before he re-married. He came home from the army and remarried Emily Mosse. Then he re-enlisted and went into the army leaving my sister and me with said Emily Mosse.

I thought that italicized phrase might shed some light on things as it seems to suggest that only Moses and his little sister (Sophie, two years his junior) were in the home, so it would seem like something happened to all of the other siblings -- death, perhaps.

But looking at the ages of the siblings, it seems equally, if not more plausible, that all were grown enough (by standards of the time) to have been gone from the house.

In 1863, when he re-enlisted, Amelia Melvina would have been 22, Edward would have been 21, Mary would have been 17, Louisa would have been 14.

With the exception of Louisa, all of the rest of those children would likely have been deemed plenty old to be working outside the home as servants or farm hands, or married off.

The Children of 3GRGR

For a while, I've been neglecting the children of my 3GRGR, Julius.  I know of my 2GRGR Moses and have some work on him -- a few photos, vague knowledge of him as both a lumberman and a farmer, an affidavit in his father's pension file, but not a ton more.

What I'm decidedly lacking, though, is much information on his siblings.  I know from the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census that he had siblings -- several. In 1850, the census shows:

In line 3, Julius appears BELOW the man we believe was his father, Charles, who was reported in the household of Julien, Julius's brother.  With him were Jane (Mary "Jane" Garrow / Marie Genevieve Garrant), Edouard, age 8 (b. c.1842), Amelia, age 9 (b. c.1841), Mary, age 4 (b. c.1846), and Louisa, age 1 (b. c.1849).  No Moses . . . yet.

In 1860, the census for Mooers, New York, shows:

Julius and Mary Jane in lines 1 and 2 with children (presumably the same as from 1850) Melvina, age 20 (presumably the "Amelia" listed in 1850), Mary, age 16 (presumably the Mary in 1850, although the ages are two years off), Louisa, age 12 (presumably the same Louisa as in 1850).

Additionally, there are, Moses, age 7 (b. c.1853 - my 2GRGR), and Sophie/Sophia, age 4, (b. c.1856), who were not born when the 1850 census was taken.

By 1870, Julius appears in the Census with only his wife (the woman I believe was his third wife) and living next door to a family headed by a man who I think was his nephew, Nelson (Francis Nelson's son):

In line 25, Julius, age 51 appears with "Sarah" age 27. This "Sarah" I think is a woman referred to in his Soldier's Pension and a later Widow's Pension as "Salome Lajeunesse."  I don't know much about this wife other than when he married her and when she died. Julius appears to have married her shortly after his second wife left/was kicked out, shortly after his service in the Civil War ended. According to my 2GRGR's pension affidavit, Ms. Lajeunesse died in 1878.  It sounds as though most of Julius's children had moved away or died by the time of the third wife, although this isn't entirely clear.  Moses and Sophia would have only been about 10 and 8, respectively in 1865 and only 15 and 13 by 1870, when the census was taken.

I've not been able to find my 2GRGR or any of his siblings in the 1870 Census and none of them except Moses in later census records. Oddly enough, the closest that I've come to finding a sibling is locating a woman who suspect might be Moses's half sister, by Julius's second marriage to Emily Moss.

Along with finding Francis Nelson and figuring if he was, in fact, Julius's brother, the next big task needs to be Julius's own children.

Marriage of my 3GRGR-Uncle Charles

The marriage of my third great grand uncle, Charles Denis to Marie Letourneau in 1830 also provides further support for the LaPorte-Denis name interchangably with the Denis name.

In St Marguerite de Blairfindie, the family seems to have used "Denis" almost exclusively for period in the late 1700s and early 1800s. As the family moved further south to Napierville and worshiped at St-Cyprien, the LaPorte part of the name seemed to come back a bit.  At least this was the case of the marriage of Charles and Marie.

Here again, Charles (my 4GRGR) is referred to as "Charles Denis dit LaPorte" married to "Marie Guenet."

In scanning a bunch of my grandparents' photos, periodically I come across ones like this:

The photo is dated but the date has worn to be illegible.  Based on his age, I'd say most likely is 1950 or so -- especially given that other photos on the same album page are dated "1950." Andy or my dad, Ron LaPorte (b. 1940) might also know who the neighbor kids are. [updated above].

They lived at 14 Lozier Place, Plattsburgh, New York at that time and throughout the rest of my grandparents' (Lloyd Vincent LaPorte and Jennie (nee Rock) LaPorte) lives.  It was between Boynton and Riley Aves, so I'm sure the kids were in the near vicinity of there and many likely went on to Plattsburgh High School.

A little bit scattered . . . Rocks and LaPortes . . . and Sorels

I've been sporadically in and out of trees lately looking at a bit of this and a bit of that.  No real plan.  I need to change that.  The closest that I came to focus recently was in a project that should really be a lower priority than it is right now -- working on completing the "descendants of Joseph Rock" (another of my 3GRGRs).  I got further bogged down in a project that will get some further attention on the blog because its happened a number of times -- namely, the intermarriage of Rocks and LaPortes.

My grandfather Lloyd LaPorte married Jennie Rock.  My 8GRGR Catherine LaPorte married Philibert Couillaud (who was a precursor to Larocquebrune, Larocque, Rocque and Rock families).  Couillaud was believed to be a "dit" name -- "Couillaud dit Rocquebrune." My first cousin four times removed, Sophie LaPorte married Julien Gideon Larocque.  Those are off the top of my head.  I'm sure there are countless others.

In any case, I had stumbled upon another one in Elmire/Elmira/Almira Rock, my 2GRGRAunt. She seems to have married Alexandre LaPorte.  So, seeing other of these unions, I dug deeper -- up and down their trees.  I had the auxiliary goal of documenting ANY LaPorte related to me -- by blood or by marriage -- in part as a way to keep track of LaPortes who popped up in researching ones that were the real focus any work at any given time.  I say "seems" because there also seemed to be some suggestion that Elmire was married to a Sorrel (a possible sister, Mary -- possible, because Mary and Elmire are often the same, and I haven't yet dug deep enough -- may have also married a Sorell, so some confusion possibly to clear up there).

In any case, I wanted document descendants of Joseph Rock, which necessarily included descendants of Elmire Rock LaPorte, so this was a double bonus.  That's still a work in progress, but there was at least Raymond LaPorte (b. 1877 d. 1962), Eva M. LaPorte (b. 1884 d. 1972), and Gertrude Maude Laporte (b. 1890 d. 1984).

Gertrude Maude died without children.

Raymond married Elizabeth Martin and they had Dorothy Magie LaPorte (b. 1911 d. 1985) and Esther G. Laporte (b. 1915 d. 2010).  Dorothy married Victor Rabideau, Jr. and had Elizabeth "Betty" Rabideau and Donald Rabideau (b. 1938).  Esther married Ronald Silver (b. 1907) and had children John, Michael, Patricia and William.  That's as far forward as I've gotten on those folks, although obituaries definitely show many other children and grandchildren.

Eva M. LaPorte married Arthur Steward Lefeve (b. 1884 d. 1959) and had Bernard (b. 1907 d. 1974), Esther G. (b. 1909 d. 2000), Lionel F. (b. 1913 d. 1984) and Leonard W. (b. 1921 d. 2005). Bernard Married Alice Elizabeth Watts (b. 1914 d. 1990) and together, they had a daughter (as yet unknown to me, who married a man named Josesph and a son named David Arthur Lefeve (b. 1939 d. 2003). Mrs. Joseph had Joseph Rheal.  Nothing further on this branch for now.

Esther G. Lefeve married Leon Lynch and had (Rev. John Lynch d. 2011) and Kathleen Lynch (b. 1946 d. 2009). Both died without children.

Lionel F. Lefeve married a woman named Helen and had (Joan K. Lefeve b. 1937) and John Lefeve (b. 1939) Nothing yet further on these branches.

Nothing further on Leonard W. Lefeve.

So, that was the rabbit hole for descendants.  The ancestry search for Alexandre LaPorte was also a chore.  After finding a lot of nothing (including some confusing 1870 census information, which seemed to have him in a household of another man named Alexander LaPorte, who was only a dozen or so years his senior),

which was more than a bit confusing, but then I found this at Mundia.com a sister site to ancestry.com (click to expand):

I've not dug through all of it, but traced up and found that these "LaPortes" became "LaPorte" around this time (1850s or so) and don't seem to trace back to Jacques de LaPorte dit St Georges. They were "Sorel" and traced back to a guy named Hilaire Jean Baptiste Sorel-dit-Leville.  Curious how the "LaPorte" made its way in there . . ..

But, that is all by way of digression.  I SHOULD BE focused on the Charles Denis line of things. Having discovered a BUNCH of Denis baptism and burial records at St. Marguerite de Blairfindie, I need to process ll of that information, including what seems to be a significant absence of information -- namely the absence of a Francis Nelson LaPorte analog in the "Denis" family.

Indexing . . . Old School!

OK, so here's a tip -- you are learning from me because I learned the hard way. Recall when I mentioned that I'd been paging through records for St Marguerite de Blairfindie?  Well, there's an easier -- and still free way.

LDS over at www.familysearch.org (my favorite free genealogy site by far) has the old-school indices for those records here and here.

There is still some paging through that needs to be done, but you can jump to the year or year ranges you are looking for and there are roughly alphabetized entries for the records, directing you back to the main volumes.

As an added bonus, these indices (at least so far to me) have been WAAAAAAY more legible than the originals!!

My Great Uncle Pierre Denis

I've got further linkage of the Denis-LaPorte connection recently. Another of my 3rd Great Uncles, Pierre, was born 4 Dec 1812,  Pierre was a later find -- he didn't show up in any search of ancestry.com's index of the Drouin Collection of Quebec Catholic records.

So I jotted down the birth dates of the uncles and aunts that I knew and bracketed off nine-month windows from the births of children I knew of (to be safe, not giving my 4th Great Grandmother any rest between delivery and conception and/or accounting for premature births . . . ) and started paging through the records.

Pierre's entry showed this:

The text follows the same format that has been seen in prior posts.  When it refers to the "legitimate marriage of" part, the name listed is "Charles Denys dit LaPorte . . .   and Marie Guenet."

The handwriting of this entry is different than earlier entries -- more slanted, more flowing, a lighter hand. It spells "Denis" with a "y" (Denys). Significantly, it includes as a "dit" name (background on "dit" names here). So, for years, my 4GRGR is referred to in church records simply as "Denis" and then this entry shows up "dit LaPorte."

This is further confirmation that we have the same person through the years, all responsible for the (now updated to) eleven children, and still looking for Francis Nelson LaPorte.

My Fourth Great Grandparents' First Child - My 3rd Great Grand Uncle Charles

After marrying on 13 July 1796, Charles LaPorte-Denis and Marie Marguerite Guenet had their first child, Charles.  Charles the younger appears in the same church records as the LaPorte-Denis / Guenet marriage -- St Marguerite de Blairfindie:

On 4 Jan 1798, Charles was baptised:

My French is horrible, so here is what I can decipher:

1798
Le cinq janvier mil sept cent quatre vingt dix huit . . . baptisme Charles ne la nuit precedent[,] du legitime marriage de Charles Denis de de Marie Pelagie Guenet . . . 

Roughly (by me) translated, it says:

On January 5, 1798, is the baptism of Charles, who was born the night before [4 Jan 1798] of the legitimate marriage of Charles Denis and Marie Pelagie Guenet . . . .

It then lists (I think) either the witnesses or the God parents.  There looks to be a reference to an "Alexandre" and also to "Marie Dejadon."  The Marie Dejadon may refer to Marie Guenet's mother.

3GR Uncles and Aunts

I had known/suspected that Julius LaPorte had siblings -- some speculated that Julian, Julius, Francis Nelson, and Joseph LaPorte were all brothers living in and around Mooers, New York. In a series of posts, here and here, for example, I've started to show the father-son link between "Julius LaPorte" in the United States and "Charles Denis" in Quebec.  And, also, the sibling relationship between Julius and Julian and Julius and Francis Nelson, which is evidenced later, among other ways, through Julius's Civil War Pension file.

I've started to dig through church records from St. Marguerite de Blairfindie in L'Acadie, St Jean Sur Richelieu in Quebec, Canada. In those, with the help of my cousin, Jonathan Tetreault, we've been able to locate Julius and Julian (both listed as "Julien"s).  These records showed births in 1810 and 1815.  But this was a long way away from the first child that I was aware of between "Charles LaPorte" and "Marie Guenet."  Charles "Junior" was born in 1798, according to the PRDH site. That left a lot of child-bearing years in between a first child (born two years after their marriage) and the births of the two siblings I confirmed.  So, I went browsing through images and found (so far):

Marie, born 27 Jun 1800.
Louis, born 11 Feb 1803.
Antoine, born 24 Oct 1804.
Adelaide, born 16 Jul 1807.
Julien (a/k/a Julian), born 12 Jan 1810.
Julien (a/k/a Julius), born 22 Apr 1815.
Marguerite, born 1 May 1817.
Joseph, born 2 Mar 1820.
Francois, born 8 Oct 1822.

[UPDATE] We've found another one -- Pierre, born 4 Dec 1812.

This is what I've got so far.  There may be some kids in those gaps greater than 18 months -- maybe -- and I'll check again, but I think that this is close.

I also found the burial record for Joseph, later in 1820, so this doesn't seem to confirm a "Joseph LaPorte" related to my 3GRGR later in Mooers, New York.  So, more digging needed there.

Also, burial records and tombstones suggest that Francis Nelson was born about 1813.  While there is a gap there that I need to investigate, I also wonder if this might be Francois born later. Initially, I had Julian born about 1803 or possibly 1807 and it now looks like he was born in 1810.  Nine years seems a long time to mistake for your birth date, though.

No idea how many of these folks survived childhood.  Louis and Joseph didn't.  The former died in 1809 at about six years old, the later, as noted above in 1820 as an infant. Also, no idea how many meandered south across the U.S. - Canada border.  Whoever did, though, may have come as a "Denis" rather than a "LaPorte."

Descendants of Charles LaPorte-Denis

As noted below, I'm closing on very solid confirmation of my 3GRGR's relationship to lines desdendant from Jacque de LaPorte dit St-Georges.

A parallel project that I'm engaged in is cataloging the complete descendants of Julius LaPorte, a/k/a Jules LaPorte, a/k/a Julien Denis.

I've generated a report from Family Tree Maker including 5 generations from Charles, his father.  I've included that below.

While this is FAR from complete, and, I'm sure, contains MANY errors, it is a start. Hopefully, this will provide others who are researching in the area some information and will also help identify other descendants of Julius and his father, Charles, which will in turn faciliate the exchange of more information.
